The Difference Between Day and Night Minimal Makeup

Ever since the minimal makeup look has been the next big trend, it has been hard to distinguish how this changes from day to night. You might think about how you can keep a night out makeup look minimal. In this guide, we will go through how to create a minimal look for the day and how you can then layer that look for the night.

The Prep

Whether your look is for day or night, the preparation is still just as important to ensure your makeup is long-lasting and stays looking as good as it did when you left the house. First step to face prep is cleaning the face, which can be done with a cleansing face wash or a cleanser and cotton pads. Making sure your base is clean provides a smooth canvas to work with, but more importantly, prevents clogged pores. Next step is hydrating your face using a hydrating moisturiser, to prevent patchy or cakey makeup, but also helps to provide a healthy glow through your makeup. The final step, and probably the most important to make your makeup last, is a good primer. A good primer ensures your makeup is applied seamlessly, lasts and adheres better.

The Day

Now the prep is done, the aim for the day makeup is to create as much of a skin-like finish as you can. This is where the ‘no makeup’ make-up term comes from, although you’re wearing makeup, the aim is to enhance natural features rather than full coverage. To achieve this look, you want to start with a tinted moisturiser or, if you like a little coverage, a very lightweight foundation to even out your skin tone. On top of this, you can use a little bit of concealer to brighten the under eye and to cover any blemishes. Now, to add some dimension, a creamed bronzer is perfect to enhance your natural cheekbones, along with adding a sun-kissed look by adding some on your nose and above your temples. If you like to include a blush in your routine, this is where you can use a cream blush to add some colour to the top of your cheeks and again on your nose for the sunkissed look. Finally, you can add some mascara, tinted eyebrow gel, and lip gloss to complete the day look.

The Night

Use the same prep as the day to prepare your face for the night look. You can add a further step by using under-eye patches to hydrate the under-eye area to help your concealer sit better. This is more down to choice, whether you prefer to do your eyes first or your face, we will go with eyes first for the sake of this guide. To stick with the minimal trend, we want to use natural colours on our eyes. To make your eyebrows stronger but still natural for the evening, you can go in with an eyebrow pencil as well to create hair stroke lines where you feel it to make the brow look fuller. Now for the actual eyes, stick to using browns for the eyeshadow, sometimes doubling up your bronzer is perfect to add some colour to the eyelid. Again, this is a personal choice, but you can now add eyeliner, making sure it is relatively thin to keep it minimal. Finally, for the eyes, finish off with mascara. If you want to enhance your eyes, you can add a small half lash. Now onto the face, this is where it is very similar to the daytime but just with more layers. For the base, you will probably want to go in with a foundation but you still want it to be relatively lightweight. It is important to help the makeup last through the night after each layer you go in with some setting spray. Again with the concealer, same but more, making sure it is left to set then blended out well. With the bronzer, you will want to replace the cream bronzer with a cream contour to create a deeper dimension and then continue to build and set with a powder bronzer. This is the same for blush, you can stick with the cream blush, but set with a powdered blush. Finally, the lips, now that it is the evening, you might want to enhance your lips by slightly overlining with a lip liner. To keep it minimal, use a colour that is similar to your natural colour. Refy Beauty has really nice natural shades. A hydrating lip gloss is perfect to complete the look. Don’t forget to finish with a big spritz of setting spray.
