Berghaus Opens in Manchester

British outdoor brand Berghaus has opened a new store at Manchester Arndale shopping centre, its first standalone store in the North West. The store will serve as a community hub, offering more than just traditional retail, according to the company.
Berghaus has been operating for over 60 years and says the new space will be a place where customers can connect with the brand and the community. The store also offers Repairhaus, a circularity initiative where the team repairs well-loved gear free of charge.
To mark the opening, Berghaus will host a week-long programme of events, including community walks and local partnerships. On the day of the opening, an official ribbon cutting ceremony was hosted by Berghaus co-founder Peter Lockey, as well as brand ambassadors including British mountaineer Sir Chris Bonington and adventurer Ed Jackson.
A DJ takeover will follow on Friday, while on Saturday the brand has partnered with Manchester local business Bada Bing to serve 50 limited-edition crisp sandwiches to customers. On Sunday, the store will serve as the starting point for a community walk through the city, in partnership with City Daze.
Berghaus was founded in 1966 in Newcastle upon Tyne by climbers and mountaineers Lockey and Gordon Davison. They have a long history in the North of England and have recently built a strong following among young consumers, fuelled by the rise of outdoor fashion.
The brand has also long been a firm favourite on the streets and football terraces of Manchester, brought into the spotlight when Liam Gallagher wore a Berghaus jacket on stage in Oslo, Norway, in 1997. The tri-colour ‘Trango’ jacket that Gallagher originally wore was relaunched in 2024, along with two other outerwear ‘Icons’, with the Oasis lead singer fronting the campaign.
Franck Denglos, EMEA President, Pentland Brands, has commented on the Manchester store opening, saying that it feels like a natural homecoming for Berghaus. They join a wave of recent brand commitments to Manchester Arndale, further strengthening the destination’s position as a regional hub for fashion, sportswear and lifestyle retail.
The new store is expected to be a major draw for outdoor enthusiasts and fans of the brand, and its community-focused approach is likely to resonate with locals. As they continue to grow and expand their reach, they will balance their heritage with their newfound popularity, and use their new store as a hub for community engagement and outreach.
The store will feature a range of products, including outerwear, footwear, and accessories. It will also offer a range of services, including Repairhaus and a community walk programme.
With its unique approach to retail and its strong brand heritage, the store is set to become a major destination for outdoor enthusiasts in the North West, offering a high street shopping experience like no other.
